To Fade or Taper

I know that I run into this question all of the time. We have to first understand the difference between the two. The way that I define them are, (fade is all the way up the head like a WALL, straight up) where as a (taper is a low fade, around the ear’s and low fade of the hair line in the back of the head). I also follow the rule of the shorter the hair on top the shorter and higher the fade can go. I ask my client 5 questions. You have to consider the age of the client as well. A younger client will be ok with a tight high fade as where an old client may just more of that traditional taper so make sure to pay attention to this.

1. How short do they like the top?
2. What is his style?
3. What is his profession?
4. How long between cuts does he go?
5. Is he open to suggestions?

If my client wants to wear more of a traditional come over part style and look more professional I would us the taper technique and clean him up around the ears and neck, and yes I could do a bald tapper just keep it low. If the client wants a longer top with some texture and length (edgy) we could do either, taper or fade just depends on the over all final style that is desired. Your more traditional fohawk, spike, or short crew top will be prime candidates for a nice tight fade. I as a stylist love to have a tight bald tapper or tight bald fade working from bald into hair not just shaved up the sides but actually sculpted and shaped to compliment the clients head shape and business style. I hope these 5 simple rules help some of you stylists out in the world and for the potential clients I hope it helps you describe your next cut with your stylist better. follow us on instagram @evanscollege and on twitter @Evanscollege
